A Dam Good Event
The weather was very kind and the atmosphere most convivial at the start and finish of the Northern Ireland Colour Series League No 3, right on top of the Silent Valley Dam. With almost 100 competitors there was a course for everyone for beginners, progressing and experienced orienteers alike. Thanks to are due the LVO team of planner Susan Bell, organisers Davy Lambe/Harry Bell and controllers Richard Williamson/Harold White and on-the-day helpers for an excellent day of technical orienteering on Slievenagore as well as easier courses for our new and progressing orienteers.
On the tough Brown course Mark Stephens was a full 10 minutes ahead of second placed Billy Reed whist leading lady on the Brown Helen Pruzina beat mum Steph by exactly 4 minutes. The experience of M65 won through for David Blair, a win which now will put him ahead in the Blue league over Daniel Earnshaw with Heather Cairns winning the women’s course. Mark Earnshaw and Ruth Blair were first man and woman on the Short Green. Chloe Reed was first female NI finisher on the Green course however the most pleasing result of the day was on the winner of Green course. Only a few months ago Colin Henderson was seriously ill facing surgery and treatment for pancreatic cancer, so it was a delight to see him returning, not only to competitive orienteering, but to winning form. You can read Colin’s story in an article in the Belfast Telegraph.
