Organiser's Report

This week it was Wilson McAlister who set the challenge for the 50 or so people who travelled to Peatlands park, many remarking that it was the first time they had been there.

The area provided some interesting features including a miniature railway track and, for those on the Long course, an area of bog crossable only by duckboards. It seems one or two runners had notions of trying to cross the latter by alternative routes, but, in the end, thought better of it! The Long course also generated much discussion about features (thickets in particular!) and route choices, and it was generally agreed that the map is in need of some updating.

The Long course was hotly contested, with Declan McGrellis recording the fastest time, and Jonny Gallier hot on his heels. Two seconds then separated Patrick Higgins and Rory Finlay in 3rd and 4th places respectively. However, handicap places still had to be worked out and it fell to Stephen Gilmore and his trusty calculator to undertake this complicated task in time for the prize-giving. Fred Hamond emerged the victor, with James Murray (M18) scooping the prize for the best newcomer on the Long course.

The Short course this week attracted the largest field of the series, with Adam McAlister, Dearbhla Knight and Adam Weir in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Again, handicap times resulted in first prize being awarded to Claudia Cole, with the prize for the best newcomer going to Sonya Sleator.

Just for the record, 12 runners attended all 4 events, 11 made it to 3 events, and approximately 70 came once or twice.

As it was the last event in the County Armagh series, the evening was rounded off with a BBQ – thanks to Sandra Gilmore for providing a timely supply of delicious hot-dogs. We even managed to lay on some good weather!

And for a final time, the thanks: to Wilson McAlister for his ‘grand designs’; to Louisa for manning the computer; to Alan Gartside for his advice to the series planners and for printing all the maps; to Helen Baxter, Regional Development Officer, for presenting the prizes; and to Stephen Gilmore, as overall WEE series co-ordinator, for his advice and support. Finally, to all of you who, come rain or shine, supported the events.

The June series moves to South Antrim, the first event being held in Antrim Forum and Castle Gardens on the 6th June. Wilbert Hollinger is co-ordinating the events and I’m sure he would like to hear from any budding planners out there!
