What Happened
In spite of another very wet evening, 60 or so people made the journey to Gosford Forest Park to pit their wits against Katarina Stefko’s courses. Katarina, at the age of 16, is our youngest planner to date and this was her first foray into the planning side of orienteering; and what a great job she did, perhaps also inspiring other Juniors to follow suit.
Another first was Bill Simpson’s first run for nine months following a hip operation. And what a comeback, surprising Wilbert Hollinger who was only six seconds faster than him!
Hot competition abounded elsewhere, with Rory Finlay clocking the fastest time on the Long course this week, Jonny Gallier having led the field at Lurgan Park and Palace Stables. However, the handicap system makes for interesting results and the first three places after three events are occupied by Fred Hamond, Philip Stuart and Wilbert Hollinger. So, with the best three results to count overall, there is all to play for next week!
This week, we also welcomed seventeen members of Mullabrack GAA. Undaunted by the rain and enthusiastic to compete, most of them opted to have a go at the Long course and, after one or two shaky starts, all did very well to get round. Hopefully, they will be inspired to come to some other events in the future.
Lastly, the thanks: to Katarina for her hard work in planning the courses; to her Dad, Igor, for his assistance; to Louisa, as usual for her IT input (did anyone notice the Solitaire in the background?!); and, not least, to Ivan Millar who magically produced a generator from his van when the club generator ran out of petrol!
Next week is the last Armagh WEE Series event – we look forward to seeing you at Peatlands Park.
