What Happened- An Organiser's Report

It would seem the summer has decided to return, and we had a glorious evening's sunshine this Wednesday. Thanks to everyone who turned up and I hope you enjoyed your run round Musgrave. It really is a lovely park and it would seem for many people this was their first time in it. We do hope you will return!

The Musgrave map has the largest scale and it looks like the intricate shrubbery has proved a good test at speed. It will be good practice for Botanic next week, where we also have our end-of-series BBQ and prizegiving. Bring your results printout to the BBQ to put your name on a hotdog - all free of course.

The matter of the prizewinners has yet to be decided and it is set to go down to the wire at Botanic. On the Long league, Philip Stuart has retained his lead from last week, while Jack Millar moves up into second. Rory and Jonny are also still in with a shout for the glory of first place, if my maths is right.

On the Short course, Harry Millar has built up an unassailable lead. Will he manage the perfect score? Jamie, Olivia and James are still in hot pursuit of second place, and there is the matter of the newcomers' prize to be decided.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the night a success. I think Geoffrey's planning skills will be in demand since he planned such devious courses this evening, aided & abetted by Stephen Gilmore.

Four down, one to go..........see you next week

Planner's report from Geoffrey Collins:
Wednesday's course was a joint effort. As a novice planner I am indebted to the huge contribution of Susan Bell and Stephen Gilmore. With such help no-body should have any apprehension about being "volunteered" to plan a course. I was pleased to see a good turnout - it makes the work worthwhile.

Judging by what I saw as I walked the course competitors seemed to be taking a diverse choice of routes (correct or otherwise). As a planner that was encouraging as it meant a challenge was being provided.

At one point a marker in Grovelands was reported as "moving about" (marker 10 on the short course, 17 on the long course). I know this delayed one competitor, I hope not too many others as it was quickly replaced.

Grovelands proved to be the trickiest part of the course. A number of the faster competitors had their lowest placings on the split times through Grovelands. I feel there is scope for quite difficult course planning in this area, small though it is.

While planning seems a relatively big job to a novice like myself I can't imagine the days of work which must go into creating a map in the first place. Thanks to Bill Simpson for mapping this interesting area for us.
