What Happened- An Organiser's Report

Another balmy summer's evening has drawn to a close, with some fast running round Lady Dixon. I hope you enjoyed David's courses which should have given you time to stretch your legs and tire you out, as well as giving a whistle-stop tour of the quite fabulous rose gardens, shortly after Rose Week. But did you have time to stop & smell the roses??

The league for the Belfast series is starting to take shape now. On the Long course, Jonathon McCloy has emerged triumphant on both nights, and currently heads up the league as well - an impressive feat since he also has a maximum (or should that be minimum?) handicap. With a lot of the more experienced LVO members returning from Scotland next week, the heat will be on.

On the Short course, our first week's league leader, newcomer Olivia Fleming, has been overtaken by Harry Millar. She now shares second place with Jamie Wilson. A late charge by the two older Millar boys on the Short course left us with a Millar 1-2 on the night, with younger brother James hot on their heels.
With age on her side, a superior handicap means Olivia leads up the rest of the Lyle family in the Short league, and the younger members of the Cummings family are well-placed to put in a challenge over the next couple of weeks.

I must mention the problem we had on the night, with some of the local vagrants making off with equipment. While this is replaceable, it is frustrating for competitors and organisers alike to have their evening disrupted. In the results, penalties for missed controls have been removed and nominal splits given where needed.
Special thanks for services above and beyond the call of duty go to Bill & Jonathon; thanks to them we had controls re-appear later in the evening. Also thanks to Jack and Harry Millar, to Rosemary Croley and to Philip, Helen & Olivia Baxter for collecting in controls & helping on the night. Particularly when I neglected to tell them how to dismantle the security system. Sorry folks!

Next week we're off to Orangefield Playing Fields & Greenville Park; further details now online.

And planner's report from David Corbett: What an honour it was to be allowed to set a course in Lady Dixon Park, especially just after Rose week, which when doing an inspection of the control sites was so much the better, cos the place was still blooming marvellous! Of course this did make setting the course a little more interesting so to avoid having a stampede on the night over any of the Rose beds.

I had hoped that when myself and Susan had finalised the control sites that they would have been able to stay there, but alas there are always some young idiots who have to spoil the fun of others and I apologise to anyone whose race was ruined because of it.

Unfortunately I was not able to be there on the night to hear how bad a job I did planning the event; a family get together saved me. Susan has told me no-one was too disappointed and the numbers on the night were brillant.

My thanks go to all those who helped out on the night in one way or another and to Susan for all her help in planning the course and working the fancy computer software to lay down the maps. I hope that everyone enjoyed the courses and will come to the rest of the Wee Series events in Belfast. David
