Junior Training Weekend

29-30 January 2011

The junior training weekend started off at Crossmurrin with 15 juniors and 6 coaches.  The weather was sunny and clear but with a cold nip in the air.  The terrain was excellent, open country side, dry under foot albeit with some marshes, and areas of thick hazel woods which tested navigation.  The group was split up into smaller groups, each undertaking a different task with a range of courses available varying in ability.

After the training session the group headed to Gortatole OEC where warm showers were welcomed and dinner was prepared.  After dinner the group had a debrief session discussing the day’s events, new skills learnt, ways forward, upcoming important events and self massage techniques for sport injuries.

On Sunday the juniors went to Florencecourt and took park in the last Fermanagh Frost Bite series, where they hopefully practised skills learnt from the day before.  The terrain was somewhat different from Crossmurrin now consisting of mainly forestry, numerous ditches and streams, damp and mossy under foot and thick undergrowth in places.  Map quality was an issue on the day due to the poor quality of colour meaning that the light green areas appeared almost virtually white!  This lead to somewhat a disadvantage but as everyone was in the same situation this meant that vegetation boundaries could not be relied on and therefore other map detail was important eg, walls, earth backs, contours, ditches, rivers… which was like a training session and proved to be a good exercise on its own.

All in all, the weekend was extremely enjoyable with lots learnt and practised. I would like to thank everyone who helped with the planning and organising of this training weekend and look forward to the next one.
