Friday 1st July – Travelling
Caught the 11.30 Belfast HSS ferry to Stranraer and then drove by minibus to Hallthwaites where overnight accommodation was arranged. Once unpacked, the squad interacted in some team building exercises before discussion of what the next few days ahead would entail, course analysis and briefings took place.
Saturday 2nd July – Individual – Haverigg
Day one comprised of a small compact sand dune area with blistering sun and no shade. The M18 were faces with a 10km course which was new to some and the MW16 and MW18 had to negotiate a spectator’s control which proved problematic for numerous individuals except for our squad who proceed through this area smoothly.
After an enjoyable day racing all squads headed to Ulverston Victoria High School for overnight accommodation and where squads were allowed to unwind, refuel and rest before the relays.
Sunday 3rd July – Relay – Simpson Ground
All regions found courses very tough technically and physically (MW14 were more like Green instead of Light Green standard) but today the forest provided some welcomed shade from the unrelenting sun.

“Was a great and successful JIRC trip. The Northern Ireland team was awesome and the newcomers were especially good! Day 1 was on sand dunes; terrain was fast and quite challenging both mentally and physically. Day 2 relays were through forest; terrain was unpleasant and navigation difficult was very hard to relocate. Everyone came back and no one swore to quit orienteering. It was another enjoyable trip, the weather helped and we are quite sad that this is our last. We would like to wish future JIRC teams the very best. Many thanks to Greg and Sharon.”
