Well done to the twelve Teams who raised sponsorship and turned out for the Hillsborough Oyster Festival - Iron Oyster Challenge on 2nd Sept - a four-stage event set in Hillsborough Forest. Orienteering was the first leg of the event which was blessed with beautiful sunny weather, and proved an enjoyable challenge for the teams of 3 (+Manager) who all returned respectable times on the tricky course. Further stages of an Obstacle Course, Quiz and Archery events where all factored into the final results – which resulted in an overall win for Team Dromara Destroyers, who where also recipients of the LVO trophy for the orienteering leg. Second place went to Team Bottom of the Lake, with Team Desperate Housewives picking up the prize for the most funds raised for the festival charity. Thanks to local club members Geoffrey C. and Stephen G. as well as Mark, John, Fiona and Noel of the Festival team for making it happen. The Club thanks the Oyster Festival organisers for the opportunity to promote our sport and be associated with such a worthwhile cause.

Congratulations to the 21 LVO and QUBOC members and guests who came to the first WEST on Wednesday at the Dub. All enjoyed a pacing exercise and a visualisation run with a difference in balmy summer evening weather. The training next week will be in Wallace Park, Lisburn, on Wed 08 Sep. This will be a repeat of last year’s micro orienteering which was thoroughly enjoyed by all those taking part despite torrential rain. The activity will be centred on the bandstand (park at the carpark at the Belsize Road end of Wallace Park and walk up the main central path – the bandstand is very visible). On offer will be a number of short courses (500 – 700m long) designed to practice you in keeping in touch with the map as you run. This adult training is put on in response to club members’ requests for skills coaching. The training will suit those who are at Orange standard or better; if you want to bring a novice junior with you then you will have to be prepared to escort him or her round. Starts are from 6.15 to 7.15 pm (earlier finish as the evenings become shorter). There will plenty of opportunity for chat and banter, but please bring your own flask of tea or coffee as there is nowhere for us to make it! The coaching will be free for club members and £4 for non-members (who can join there and then if they wish!!). Come along and sharpen your skills following your triumph in the Autumn Trophy in Hillsborough at the weekend.

Its not often someone lends you their Batmobile - but it has happened - and the LVO are now entered in the Oyster Festival Soapbox race. We have a couple of willing drivers (Cecil and Patrick - subject to fitting) but are short a couple of push starters. If you are an adult and can spare a couple of hours after the Autumn Trophy (starts 1pm) on Saturday - please let me know.

After a superb end to the
WEE Series
at Musgrave Park it's all going fast downhill for LVO, or at least we hope it will for Team LVO in the Soap Box Derby at
The Hillsborough International Oyster Festival
which concides with Autumn Trophy 1 on Saturday 4 September at Hillsborough Forest.
The event will have a courses suitable for beginners as well as experienced orienteers. Registration will be at the LVO Mobile Orienteering Office (The MOO) in the carpark of Hillsborough Forest. Hillsborough Main Street will be closing at noon to set of for the Soap Box Derby, but thereafter access will still be possible from the Dromore Road. Given that the village will be busy why not come early to secure a park in the forest carpark?
For easier access and with plenty of newcomers expected at the event, we will be extending the start window from 11.30am to 1.30pm with registration commencing at 11am. For newcomers there will be some folks on hand to get you started.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the
The Hillsborough International Oyster Festival
nominated charity
Struggle Against Muscular Dystrophy (S.A.M)
The Trail-O team recently returned from the World Championships in Norway will be setting up a short Temp-O course and will be giving basic instruction.
Do plan to stay on after the event and wear your LVO colours on Hillsborough Main Street to cheer on Team LVO. There are three vacancies on the team required to help with the preparations. Contact Team Manager Wilson
particularly if you have mechanical, welding, painting or sewing skills. Judging by the consulting engineer's report it looks like its going to be fun!
"Rolling resistance and probably cornering stability are probably key characteristics. I don't think drag will be a big issue at 20 mph. So, racing bicycle wheels and tyres (maybe cambered over to reduce the side load on the wheel), a simple tubular chassis with the driver as low as possible within the regulations, as narrow as possible for the required stability to improve manoeuverability in tight bends ... Any welders? Alternatively, how about the eco option with a chassis of bamboo (well not very eco if you have to import it) or woven hazel ..."

The NIOA colour series event scheduled for September 5th has been cancelled. The Forestry Service is unable to give us permission to use the forest due to the p.ramorum infection in the Japanese larch trees.

Signs went up last week at the entrance to Woodburn Forest restricting visitors to paths and advising people to wash their footwear after their visit. They are doing a fair amount of felling of the larches in the forest.
